Pen and Ink Drawing

Students will investigate the “old-school” techniques of pen and ink, learning how to use hatching, crosshatching, stippling, and contour hatching.

Hatching: using parallel, straight lines at any angle to show both texture, value and sometimes direction (notice the lines move in the direction of the cast shadow)!

Here is an incredible pen and ink drawing using lines to generate value. Notice that the lines in the drawing are used to describe the surface texture of the objects, so they move in the direction that the edge of the object moves.

Here is another excellent pen and ink drawing.
